Richard Strauss’s Elektra is monumental. The musical scale befits the epic nature of the drama, which is based on the legend of the House of Atreus – perhaps the most dysfunctional family in world literature.
Queen Klytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus have murdered Klytemnestra’s husband Agamemnon on his return home from the Trojan War. Agamemnon’s daughter, Elektra, half-wild with grief and hatred, lives like a slave in the household praying for the return of her brother Orestes so that together they may exact a bloody revenge on their mother.
Susan Bullock, whose performances as Strauss’s Salome with Opera North in 2006 were a triumph, returns to the Company to sing the role of the matricidal princess – one of the most demanding, both vocally and dramatically, in the repertoire. With Opera North’s acclaimed Music Director Richard Farnes conducting, this will be a big operatic experience you won’t forget in a hurry.
The performance is sung in German with English titles and last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, there will be no interval.
