A rare chance to hear the first of Bach's two great Passions within the magnificent setting of Leeds Town Hall. The narrative parts retain the notation to which the original German was set and thus lose none of the work's great dramatic impact. The traditional English words are used for the hymns, arias and choruses as edited by Sir Ivor Atkins. Music scores of the chorale hymns will be provided free for the use of the audience.
City Organist Dr Simon Lindley conducts St Peter's Singers (fresh from the Choir's acclaimed tour of Mallorca), St Peter's Chamber Orchestra and the choir's resident soloists. Guests are Stephen Newlove and Thomas Asher in the roles of the Evangelist and Christ respectively.
