Ravel’s charming Mother Goose Suite draws on fairy tale and was conceived as a ballet, as were the Symphonic Dances, Rachmaninov’s last completed work and considered by many as the pinnacle of his symphonic writing. The darkness of the Dances (1940) reflect the troubled times in which they were written and also, perhaps, concerns more personal to Rachmaninov: the fact that he was nearing the end of his life, and that he would never be able to return to his homeland.
