Amanda Roocroft, winner of the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, performs five songs by Strauss, including Cäcilie and Morgen which were love poems Strauss set to music as a gift for his wife. Cäcilie opens with the words “If you but knew, sweet, what ‘tis to dream of fond, burning kisses, of wand’ring and resting with the belov’d one; gazing fondly, caressing and chatting, could I but tell you, your heart would assent.”
Mahler's first symphony features a large orchestra but it is not until the last movement that all of the instruments are heard together. The third movement features a double bass solo, a rarity in orchestral music, and Mahler based this on the tune of Frères Jacques. However, he changed the key from major to minor and it is performed in the style of a funeral march – quite different from the original!
"I believe that through Art all men are saved." Wagner
