Our opening concert commences with the first movement from Mahler’s incomplete Piano Quartet, a work begun as a teenager studying at the Vienna Conservatory. It is the only Surviving chamber work he is known to have written, moved on, as he did, to larger scale works on completing his studies.

The programme is completed by the sumptuous and richly romantic piano quintet by Korngold and Schubert’s ever-popularTrout quintet, the last movement of which is based on his song of the same name, Die Forelle.
