Brindley Sherratt

Born in Lancashire, bass Brindley Sherratt studied at the Royal Academy of Music.
At the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden his roles have included Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Jeronimus (Maskerade), He-Ancient (The Midsummer Marriage), Publio (La clemenza di Tito) and Marchese di Calatrava (La forza del Destino). In Salzburg he has sung Balducci (Benvenuto Cellini) with Gergiev, Hobson (Peter Grimes) with Rattle and Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro) on tour to Japan. At the Glyndebourne Festival he has appeared as Rocco (Fidelio), Superintendent Budd (Albert Herring) and Immigration Officer (Flight). A favourite at the English National Opera, his roles there have included Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Claudio (Agrippina), Ratcliffe (Billy Budd) and Ramfis (Aida).
Other operatic engagements include Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and Claudio in Santa Fe; Rocco in Seville; Sarastro at the Hamburg State Opera; Theseus (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) at La Monnaie, Brussels; Wurm (Luisa Miller) for Opera de Lausanne; Melisso (Alcina) for the Opera de Montpellier; Il Re (Ariodante) at the Reis Opera; Leporello (Don Giovanni), Ferrando (Il Trovatore), Gremin and Sarastro at the Welsh National Opera and Sparafucile for Opera North.
Engagements this season include Sparafucile at Covent Garden; Pimen (Boris Godunov) and Edward Teller (Dr Atomic) for the ENO; Philip (Don Carlos) for Opera North and Marke (Tristan und Isolde) in concert with the Swedish Radio Orchestra and Daniel Harding. Future plans Sarastro for the Opera de Bordeaux; a return to the ENO for ‘Messiah’; Pognor (Die Meistersinger von Nürnburg) for the WNO Ramfis and Narbal (Les Troyens) at Covent Garden.
His concert appearances include Handel’s ‘Messiah’ with the Mozarteum Orchestra and Ivor Bolton at the Salzburg Festival; Bach’s ‘St Matthew Passion’ with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Harding in Turin and also with Trevor Pinnock on tour to Vienna, Salzburg, Paris and Japan; ‘Les Noces’ with Pierre Boulez and the Ensemble Intercontemporain; Mozart’s Requiem in Paris with the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and Louis Langrée; Haydn’s ‘Creation’ with Pinnock at the Lucerne Festival; Mozart’s ‘Vespers’ at the opening of Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and the ‘St Matthew Passion’, ‘Judas Maccabeus’, ‘Les Noces’ and the ‘St John Passion’ at the BBC Proms.
He has recorded Somnus / Cadmus (Semele) for Chandos; Ubaldo (Donizetti’s ‘Imelda de Lambertazzi’) for Opera Rara and Haydn Masses and Bach Cantatas with the Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot Gardiner. His many broadcasts for radio include Mozart’s ‘Mass in C Minor’, Rossini’s ‘Petite Messe Solennelle’ and Stravinsky’s ‘Canticum Sacrum’.
