18 year old Korean wins Leeds Piano Competition

Sunwook Kim becomes the youngest winner of the Leeds piano competition in forty years.
A new star of the music world was created on Saturday September 23 at Leeds Town Hall when Sunwook Kim, an 18 year old from Seoul, South Korea, won first prize, the gold medal and £14,000 at the 15th Leeds International Piano Competition.
Sunwook Kim is the first Korean pianist, and the youngest since the very first
winner Michael Roll in 1963, to win the final of this major competition. He was praised for his majestic performance of the Brahms 1st piano concerto.
The victory will now help propel the young Korean pianist onto an international career as the winner has the pick of over 100 engagements offered by the 'Leeds' which makes it the most prestigious piano competition in the world.

2nd prize: Andrew Brownell from Portland, Oregon, USA
3rd prize: Denis Kozhukhin,from Nizhny Novgorod, Russia
4th prize: Siheng Song, from Shanghai, China
5th prize: Sung-Hoon Kim, 28 from Seoul, Korea
6th prize: Grace Fong, from Cleveland,Ohio, USA
Yurie Miura from Japan, was awarded The David Rymer Trust prize for an outstanding performance in the a semi-finals.
